| Biography / History: Kazimierz Józef Hess was born on December 2, 1912 in Tomaszów. On August 15, 1933 he graduated from the Navy Academy in Toruń with the rank of second lieutenant. At the outbreak of WWII he reached Great Britain on the destroyer ORP “Błyskawica”. In 1941 he served on the destroyer ORP “Piorun” searching for the German battleship “Bismarck”. He took part in the Norwegian campaign. From 1943 he worked in the general headquarters of the Polish navy in London, and in 1945 he took command of the British destroyer “Garland”. Promoted to commander on May 3, 1945. From August 1947 he worked for the American merchant marine.
