Card collection
1912-2005
Biography / History: This collection comprises of thousands of cards, of greeting and picture postcards addressed to the Institute, from friends’ and members’ collections, and from Polish-American Collectors’ Club.
Abstract: The collection contains the following sections: “Polish towns and villages”, “Warsaw”, “Polish landscapes”, “Kresy” (Polish eastern lands), “Commemorative patriotic” “Artistic”, and “Wartime holiday cards”. One of the largest segments of more than 700 items deals with the topic of “the Legions and their creator”, cards published during the period of the legions and intended as fund-raisers for them, displaying photographs of Marshal Józef Piłsudski at various stages of his life. The commemorative-patriotic cards address aspects of Poland’s struggle for independence, and Poles’ outstanding patriotism and involvement. Of special interest in the artistic card collection are those depicting folk costumes from different periods and regions of Poland. Holiday cards (Christmas and Easter) carry a reminder of the war time greetings exchanged by Poles during that period.
